Namtso lake

Tours Brief info:

This Namtso lake tour is ideal for those with limited time but still want to see the major attractions in Tibet and be a bit adventurous. From a day spent exploring the intricate architecture of Potala Palace to experiencing the unique beauty of Namtso Lake, experience Tibet the way it is meant to be experienced.

Recommended Groups: All groups. Best for youth, couples, and photographers.

Conditions: This tour is moderately challenging, as the maximum altitude is over 5,000 meters above sea level. The drive from Lhasa to Namtso, about 250km, takes around 4 hours. The road is in good condition, but it is a bit hilly and has many turns. The scenery you will see during the ride is impressive, so be sure to take the opportunity to take pictures! The conditions near Namsto Lake can be harsh. Some customers may have mild high altitude sickness symptoms, but most people don’t have any problems.

Best time: Namsto Lake will be closed from December to March, so the best time to take this tour is from April to November. In April the lake is frozen and tends to have a unique appearance, though it is quite cold.

Brief Itinerary

Day 1 Lhasa Arrival

Welcome to the roof of the world! You will be pick up at the airport or train station, then be escorted to your hotel in Lhasa city at the comfort of your own private vehicle. En route, enjoy the breathtaking view along the Yarlong Tsangpo River. Tibetan features can be seen along the way, including Big Buddha engravings on the hill near the road, colorful prayer flags and friendly Tibetan people.
After arrival at your hotel, the rest of the day is free for you to explore the local area and acclimatize yourself to this high altitude city at the top of the world.

Day 2 Lhasa Sight seeing

After breakfast, you will firstly visit the Norbulingka Park, the former summer palace of Dalai Lama. Explore the beautiful gardens and experience one of the most holy sites in Tibetan Buddhism while soaking up the rich history. Next, come to Drepung Monastery, which was once the largest Tibetan Buddhist monastery housing 10,000 monks in its heyday. Learn about the lives of Tibetan monks.

Your tour ends at Sera Monastery, where you will get the chance to experience “Buddhism Scriptures Debating”. These debates are unique to Sera and are quite famous. Enjoy the debates!

Day 3 Wondering Lhasa

The overwhelming Potala Palace is your first stop. As the symbol of Tibet, it was built in 641 AD and was the winter palace of Dalai Lama who is Tibet’s pope. Impressive Tibetan architecture, huge golden Buddha statues, red-robed lamas and devoted pilgrims all make it a must-visit.

In the afternoon, you’ll visit the Jokhang Temple, the spiritual center of Tibet. Every day, pilgrims from every corner of Tibet trek here from long distances to worship. Finally, walk the special circular pilgrimage route as local followers always do at Barkhor Street.

Day 4 Namtso Lake

Today, you’ll be driven to Namtso Lake, about 250km northwest from Lhasa (paved road), the second-largest saltwater lake in China. It is over 70km long and reaches a width of 30km. In clear weather the water is a stunning shade of turquoise and you will be surrounded by magnificent views of the nearby mountains. The wide open spaces, dotted with tents of local nomads, are breathtaking. You may also walk along the lake or climb up the hill near the lake to explore the area.

Tips of today:
While we recommend that you stay in a hotel back in Lhasa in the interest of comfort, you do have the option to stay at a guest house near Namtso Lake. The guesthouses lack showers. However, if you are able to put up with the discomfort, staying at the guesthouse will allow you to a great view of the sunset and sunrise, as well as a great view of the stars at night!
